Super Unicorn – Ant Financial

When talking about the most famous unicorn startups in the world, one has to mention Ant Financial, the company that has rapidly risen in global unicorn company rankings, and currently the most high-profile Chinese company.

Formerly known as Zhejiang Alibaba E-Commerce Co. Ltd., Ant Financial owns businesses such as Alipay, Alipay Wallet, Yuebao, Zhaocaibao, micro loans, and e-Commerce banking. The equity structure of Ant Financial is completely domestic. Its chief executive officer is Peng Lei, one of Alibaba’s founding team.

The term “super unicorn” is no longer enough to describe Ant Financial. “Super Narwhal” seems more appropriate.

Why so? A look at Ant Financial’s impressive portfolio shows us its global influence.

In 2018, Ant Financial secured a financing of US$14 billion. This not only broke the record for single round financing by tech companies, it also exceeded the valuation of most unicorn companies, and the market value of most listed online companies. In a single round of financing, Ant Financial became the world’s largest financial technology company.

Many well-known financial companies in the world are investors of Ant Financial, including Singapore Government Investment Corporation (GIC), Malaysian Treasury Holdings, Warburg Investment, Canadian Pension Fund Investment Company, Silver Lake Investment, Temasek, Pan Atlantic Capital Group, T. Rowe Price’s funds, Carlyle Investment Group, Janchor Partners, Discovery Capital Management, Baillie Gifford and more.

Furthermore, global financial institutions such as Bloomberg, Barclays PLC Bank, Anxin Securities, and Societe Generale all estimate that the market value of Ant Financial is between US$150 billion or US$164.5 billion.

This means that the estimated worth of Ant Financial exceeds that of financial giants such as Goldman Sachs, Paypal and Blackstone Group. It is second only to Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in the financial sector. In technology, Ant Financial comes only after Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Alibaba, and Tencent. Its worth is comparable to Netflix.
